Why Leather Matters: Choosing the Right Hide for a Handbag

When people invest in a leather handbag, they often focus on the colour, the shape, or the brand behind it. What many don't realize is that two bags can look almost identical on the day they are purchased yet age very differently over the years. The difference often comes down to the leather itself. The type of hide, the tanning process, and the way the leather is finished all influence how a bag feels in your hands, how it develops with wear, and how well it withstands everyday use. Choosing the right leather is one of the most important decisions a designer makes long before the first stitch is sewn.

The word "leather" is often used as if it describes a single material, but in reality it covers a wide range of hides with very different characteristics. Calfskin, cowhide, goat leather, nubuck, suede, and vegetable-tanned leather all behave differently. Some are exceptionally smooth and structured, while others are softer, lighter, or develop a rich patina over time. There is no universally "best" leather. The right choice depends entirely on what the designer wants the finished bag to achieve.

For our collection, we spent considerable time comparing different hides before settling on goat leather for most of our handbags. Goat leather is appreciated for its balance of softness and durability. Despite being relatively lightweight, it has a naturally tight grain that resists scratches better than many smoother leathers while maintaining its shape through regular use. It also offers a refined appearance without feeling overly delicate, making it particularly well suited to bags designed to be carried every day rather than reserved for special occasions.

Every leather tells its own story through natural variation. Small differences in grain, subtle wrinkles, and slight shifts in texture are not imperfections but characteristics that remind us the material comes from nature rather than a machine. These variations give each handbag a degree of individuality that synthetic materials cannot replicate. Rather than chasing absolute uniformity, we believe these details contribute to the authenticity and character of a well-made leather product.

The finishing of the leather is equally important. Some leathers are heavily corrected and coated to create a perfectly even surface, while others retain more of their natural texture. Heavily finished leathers can provide greater resistance to stains and moisture, whereas more natural finishes reveal the unique grain of the hide and develop a richer appearance with time. Neither approach is inherently better. It is always a balance between aesthetics, durability, and the intended purpose of the bag.

Choosing leather is therefore about much more than appearance. It influences how a handbag feels when carried, how it responds to daily life, and how it evolves over the years. A well-designed bag should not only look beautiful when it leaves the workshop but continue to age with character, becoming more familiar with every use rather than wearing out after a single season.
