Choosing the Perfect Shoulder Drop

When people think about handbag design, they usually notice the leather, the shape, or the hardware first. One detail that rarely gets any attention is the shoulder drop—the distance between the top of the strap and the opening of the bag. It may seem like a technical measurement, but it has a significant impact on comfort, proportion, and how naturally a bag fits into everyday life. A shoulder bag can be beautifully designed, but if the strap length is wrong, it quickly becomes something you stop reaching for.
Finding the perfect shoulder drop is more complex than choosing a number that feels average. Women have different heights, shoulder widths, and body proportions, which means there is no single measurement that works perfectly for everyone. A strap that sits comfortably on someone who is 175 centimeters tall may feel awkward on someone who is 155 centimeters. Likewise, a bag that hangs too low can become uncomfortable when walking, while one that sits too high may feel restrictive when worn over a coat or blazer. Every millimeter changes how the bag moves with the body.
When developing our bags, we paid particular attention to how they fit women of different heights. One of our priorities was ensuring that shorter women wouldn't feel overwhelmed by the proportions of the bag. A shoulder bag that hangs too low can appear visually larger than intended and may rest against the hip or upper thigh, making it less comfortable to carry throughout the day. We wanted our bags to remain close to the body, creating a balanced silhouette that feels intentional rather than oversized.
At the same time, we didn't want to compromise comfort for taller women. Instead of chasing an extreme trend, whether very short shoulder straps or exaggerated long drops, we focused on finding a balanced length that works across a wide range of body types. This involved repeated testing, wearing the bags throughout the day, and making small adjustments until the proportions felt natural rather than forced. The goal wasn't to design around a mannequin or a standard size chart, but around how real women actually carry their bags.
A well-considered shoulder drop also affects how often a bag is used. It should allow enough room to slip comfortably over light layers while keeping the bag close enough that it doesn't swing excessively as you walk. The opening should remain easy to access without requiring awkward movement, and the bag should stay comfortably in place whether you're commuting, travelling, or simply moving through your day. These are details that often go unnoticed when they're done well, but they're immediately obvious when they're not.
At aimée moreau, we believe good design isn't only about what people can see. It is also about the decisions they experience without thinking about them. The right shoulder drop doesn't call attention to itself, and that's exactly the point. It allows the bag to become part of your routine instead of something you constantly adjust. For us, that quiet ease is just as important as the choice of leather or the finish of the hardware, because thoughtful design should always begin with the person carrying it.
